Maui Social Media Users Group (SMUG) was formed in 2010 to provide an organized forum for people on Maui to meet regularly and learn about social media. The idea came as a result of the success of the High Tech Maui Social Media Workshop series that began early in 2010.
Original founders include Kim Haueisen of MEDB’s High Tech Maui program, Peter Liu of Kaiscapes, Karen Bennett of Picture It Solved and Jeff Bennett of Digital Splash Media.
Since originally meeting in June 2010 to discuss the idea, we’ve added a few more social media mavens into the mix – Tommy and Jen Russo of Maui Time and Liza Pierce of A Maui Blog.
The first official meeting of SMUG, held January 13, 2011, was a complete success. A full capacity crowd attending despite torrential rains and flooding hours before the event.
We had great participation from all in attendance. The excitement was palpable as everyone was eager to learn more or get started in social media.
